A local’s guide to the Tsukiji Fish market!

The other side of this bridge is the inner market.
It’s cold!
We shine our flashlight on the surface of the slice
and look at the color and such.
Is the lighting in here not enough?
It’s just different when we look at it with this.
I don’t know how to explain it, やっぱり違う。
it makes a difference.
The first one sold for 3500yen / kg.
Domestic, farm-raised.
That’s about what you can get for farm-raised.
This isn’t like a manatee, is it? lol
We take the tail end of the frozen tunas
dig out a chunk
and melt it with our hands.
We check the color and the texture of the meat.
We shine our flashlight on it to check the color.
How is this one?
This one is good.
The texture of the meat is good too.
It’s nice and moist.
This is one with a horn. (swordfish)
It goes way out to here.
The eyes are humongous!
Isn’t it cute?
Yes, very cute lol
This is where they saw the frozen tuna.
That man does it for you.
The whole world is going to see this, you know!
Thank you so much! また!
See you guys!
This is the Namiyoke (protection from waves) Shrine.
This is where they pray to prevent tsunamis and such.
Kawahagi, I wonder what you call it…
I don’t know how to explain it in English. *kawahagi – leather jacket fish
We soak it in bloody water on purpose.
On purpose? Why?
They say it keeps it fresh, not sure if it’s really true
They filet it here while it’s still alive.
This is sea urchin from Japan.
This one is from New York.
Look how neat this one from Hokkaido is!
That’s 10,000yen (apprx 90USD)
These are young sardines.
We had some yesterday.
Thank you so much!
You want to get some tea/coffee?
Yeah, let’s get some tea.
Are the auctions done?
What time do you open? 3
We open at 3:30AM. 3:30?!
*The workers get coffee here before work 場内は全部残れない。
The entire inner market has to go.
You won’t be able to eat next door
and then go drink next door.
For example, you won’t be able to eat at Dai
and then come here for coffee.
It’s going to be like a mall.
I guess it’s not going to have the same Tsukiji feel.
Yeah, it won’t have the same feel.
You won’t be able to walk around freely like this.

  1. Hi Chika! Thanks so much for this video! I'm from Singapore and I love japan so much. I've been to the tsujiki tuna auction twice before but your video alone helped me see things I nv managed to! Haha can't wait for more of your tsujiki videos and I think it's so timely, given that the whole place is going to be history very soon…

  2. I'm glad to see inside of Tsukiji market specially big tuna fish auction⭐️ Can I apply for seeing an auction in advance ? Or It's only for staff these days? I definitely want to visit there before transfer to new place!

  3. I stopped eating tuna because I fear that they will go extinct but I do eat tuna when I am in Japan. Maybe that is weird or inconsistent but that is what I do.

  4. Kudos to you Chika-san for getting in to the inner market, filming(as you said, it's not easy to shoot the video in the inner market cuz of its closeness) and sharing it to us! And I really appreciated that you talked about the relocation of Tsukiji. Now I could see the glimpse of the feelings and nostalgia of many people working there.

  5. This is the best place to go to if you want the best quality/fresh fish. But one question. Were you in one of the YouTube rewind series?

  6. You're obviously fluent in both Japanese and English, but I was wondering, do you ever get told that you have a slight accent when you speak Japanese to other Japanese people, or are you able to switch accents?
I'm always fascinated when I meet bilingual people who are able to switch languages so quickly, and I Was just curious if switching accents was as easy.

  8. Great video! Thank you for sharing this! Anyway, thanks again! and looking forward to watching the video coming next! ^^

  9. I actually like this Fish Market is so hygiene and clean in Japan and really different in my Country at Indonesia. 😁

  10. If i do not bother you guys, can anyone tell me where is the landmark of Tsukiji Fish market are located in Tokyo. Thanks. 😮

  11. If you see the buyers, the frequent buyers, you'll see that they simply signal to the auctioneers with the amount they want to pay. It's like a fast-paced synergy they're doing there. :3

  12. This was such a great video!! So unique and interesting! As a foreigner, I'm sure I will never get to see this in person. So it's awesome that you could show this to us all!

  13. thanks for filming this… I was recently in Tokyo but unfortunately didn't make the 5AM market! Great video 🙂

  14. oh wow … I'll be there in june and I wanted to visit tsukiji this time around because last time I came to Japan I spent too much time visiting my family and didn't have enough time to visit many places. =(

  18. Watching the eel getting gutted alive is both cringe-worthy…but yet I am amazed at the efficiency of it all….

  19. such a wonderful video!!!! I've never been to Tsukiji when I've lived in Tokyo.
I have to go there soon!
    Thank you for good informations.

  20. 2 to 3 meter tuna…i used to inspect fishing boats in guam and i used to see 6 foot tuna without tails that would be flown to japan and people wouldn't believe me when i told them about the size of the tuna i saw

  21. Just came across your video! I loved it. I went last weekend but super late most places were closed. Wish I had seen this video berofe going,

  22. I just wanna thanks to you for all videos. Im learning Japanese and English, it's so hard. But when I watch your video, I think Japan and Japan's cultures are super interesting and I wanna learning Japanese more and more.

    Arigatou gozaimastu

  23. whoa.. just came a cross your channel, and i like it.

umm.. by the way, me and my friends are planning to visit japan for about 9 days, at 11-19 September.
and we think, tsukiji is a good place to visit, especially before it got moved to the new place..

I just wondering, could you or friend, Tama-san(?) to get us in for seeing the auction?
or there are other way to see the auction?

  24. Thanks for your touring and sharing for the Tsukiji market. I 've heard it for long time but haven't been there. It is sad they're moving it to another place. I hope it could have the same human touch atmosphere as it is now. .

  25. Hi Chika, I really like your videos. They are pretty, stabil and the audio are super clear. I'm planning to do videos too. Do you mind sharing the equipments you use to do the recording? Really hope that you can advice me. Thank you!

  26. Wonderful video! I was in Japan in 2004 and really enjoyed my time there. This video brought back great memories of visiting the market. Thank you!

  27. I never get tired watching videos about Tsukiji fish market. Its always interesting. Also I love your videos! (Btw, Chika your skin is amazing!)

  28. why God why!!! it gonna relocated like a mall?? no more this atmosphere! we managed to save our money for next april visit and it will be relocated to be a mall :'(

I want this market atmosphere not mall, i want real fisherman, real auctioneer, real fish seller… meet the old grumpy ojisan, weird young sushi maker… i don't care about harsh attitude fisherman have that it's the world i like

    sob sob… :'(

  29. Thank you for the video, I was at the Tsukiji fish market 2 weeks ago, but didnt get a chance to go inside the inner fish market.

  31. What would, say a tourist, need to do to get into the market area to purchase some fish/ seafood to bring back to their place to eat / cook later?

  32. I love Tuna but its kind of sad to see so many of them. The way we fish and pollute our oceans, exploiting them constantly is not sustainable and will ultimately lead to our own downfall.

  33. just saw this video!are you a japanese?i noticed that you do not speak japanese hence you look like a lot of a japanese girl

  34. I just read the city of Jakarta planning to build the fish market with Tsukiji Fish Market as the reference. So here I am watching your video. Thank you

  35. Chika, I absolutely love your channel and your videos. You are so positive, informative and fun. Such a breath of fresh air on YouTube. I love everything Japanese as well. A beautiful culture and wonderful people 🙂

  36. Now the Tsukiji Fish Market has moved to a new place, any these street food outside the Tsukiji Fish Market still around ? Or majority of them shift to another place, if so, where ? Thanks

  37. Hey, really impressive video. I am currently doing some short movies about different countries of the world for an unique culinaric event in Austria, which is part of my diploma thesis.
I am looking for material to use in the short movie about Japan. This would be a really nice scene to include.Would it be possible to use some parts of this video for my short film
about Japan? I would really appreciate to hear from you :).

  38. Your video is right on time! I am going to Tsukiji Fish market this September!!! Hope it doesn't change much lol
