Green Internships at the University of Memphis.

The green internship is extremely
invaluable to learning about the business side of sustainability. I feel like sustainability
is important, especially here in the city of memphis in the fact that it makes us more
of a marketable location for commercial business. This internship was very attractive to me
because environmental issues have always been a big concern of mine. WITH JOB PROJECTIONS
IN “GREEN” AND SUSTAINABLE OCCUPATIONS TRENDING UPWARDS, TRAINING STUDENTS IN THESE FIELDS
IS BECOMING MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER. We are in the business of creating an eco-system
where the memphis of tomorrow looks very different than the memphis of today in terms of having
a wide breadth of economic activity and economic prosperity for our inhabitants. TO TAKE ADVANTAGE
OF THE CHANGING JOB MARKET, THE UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS AND NUMEROUS LOCAL ENTITIES HAVE
PARTNERED TO HELP STUDENTS GAIN VALUABLE EXPERIENCE THROUGH THE GREEN INTERNSHIP PROGRAM. With
BioWorks I have been kind of helping to develop the website for the sustainability program,
and I have also been helping out with a lot of the policies they are working on right
now as far as sustainability policies that the city needs. I work at the communications
department at international paper and it’s one of the most exciting experiences. I have
been working with their sustainability initiatives, which involves energy star benchmarking and
dealing with relations with the property managers and the tenants. At my internship this semester
I’ve been in the industrial packaging division, specifically Kraft Paper Bags. I’ve been working
on various sustainability projects, validating previous sustainability efforts, I’ve been
working towards implementing new sustainability ventures and I have also had the opportunity
to spill over into marketing. ALEX SAYS THAT BEING ABLE TO WORK ON REAL PROJECTS THAT WILL
IMPACT I.P. HAS BEEN A HUGE BENEFIT. This internship has given me the chance to work
at a fortune 125 company as well as networking with so many people. It’s really given me
a dynamic set of skills, knowledge, perspective, just endless amounts of expertise that I feel
more prepared about. THE EMPLOYERS SAY THEY ALSO GAIN FROM THE GREEN INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
AS WELL. They are excellent students, they have added so much to our ability to get certain
projects done that we would not have had the resources to do otherwise.\
Interns, having just learned a lot of the skills that we are looking for, they are able
to help us with a fresh perspective on things and they are also able to, they learn very
quickly and they are able to help us in things that we might not have thought of doing. Well,
one they bring creativity, they bring a sense of drive, they definitely are team oriented,
which is great for us, because given the fact that we have limited resources, it enables
us to be able to give projects to the interns, short term projects, where they can work together,
drive and build results, which is extremely crucial for us. GARY SAYS THAT AS A FUTURE
HUMAN RESOURCES PROFESSIONAL, LEARNING ABOUT SUSTAINABILITY AND ITS ROLE IN THE FUTURE
OF OUR ECONOMY HAS BEEN WORTHWHILE. I have learned more about sustainability than I have
ever known before. I have learned how that, how it contributes to memphis and how it can
possibly bring jobs here in the future.\ ALL OF THE GREEN INTERNS SAY THAT THIS EXPERIENCE
WILL HELP THEM IN THEIR FUTURE CAREERS. One of the things that is really important that
I’ve learned here at International Paper is communication skills. It’s something that
you’re going to have to use everyday in any business setting whether it’s through emails
or actually in person in different meetings and making presentations. It has been able
to help encourage me in some ways and also be constructive in other ways that have provided
me information that I will be able to use on a daily basis. You make so many connections
to everyone that you come in contact with. I’ve been in connections from people in memphis,
all the way to california, all the way across the country with international paper, with
other sustainable businesses, with the EPA, it is an incredible opportunity to put yourself
out there, as well as get work done. AND THEY WOULD RECOMMEND THE PROGRAM TO FUTURE STUDENTS
AS WELL. I would recommend a green internship because that is where it is at right now,
its like the hot topic with governments, private corporations, non-profits, that is the big
issue with every company right now and everyone is trying to go greener and save money and
use less. I so grateful for the opportunity the University of Memphis is so great at getting
students out of the class room whether it be through internships service learning or
engaged scholarship. I’ve had the opportunity to participate in all of those and this internship
has been my number one academic access so far.
