YSF – Summer Youth Internships Program


AS THE SCHOOL YEAR COMES TO A
CLOSE, MANY TEENS ARE LOOKING FOR SUMMER JOBS OR INTERNSHIPS–
BUT WHAT IF YOU COULD HAVE BOTH? THAT’S THE IDEA BEHIND
MIAMI-DADE COUNTY’S SUMMER YOUTH INTERNSHIP PROGRAM. A COLLABORATION BETWEEN THE
COUNTY, MIAMI-DADE PUBLIC SCHOOLS, AND THE CHILDREN’S
TRUST, FOR SIX WEEKS STUDENTS GET THE OPPORTUNITY TO
EXPERIENCE WHAT IT’S LIKE TO HAVE A REAL PAYING JOB WORKING
WITH EMPLOYERS FROM ACROSS MIAMI-DADE COUNTY. ALL WHILE EARNING
HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE CREDITS. HERE TO SHARE MORE IS GUS
BARREIRO, PUBLIC POLICY AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT LIAISON FOR
THE CHILDREN’S TRUST; AND JOSIE PODESTA SOTO, DIRECTOR
OF ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND TRAINING AT TRUMP

HERE. THANK YOU. GUS, LET’S START WITH YOU. TELL US ABOUT THE PROGRAM. IT’S A TREMENDOUS OPPORTUNITY
FOR KIDS OBVIOUSLY. WE STARTED THIS PROGRAM WITH
DIFFERENT STAKEHOLDERS IN THE COMMUNITY THREE YEARS AGO. FIRST IT WAS 1300 STUDENTS WHO
APPLIED AND WERE EMPLOYED. LAST YORE WE REACHED CLOSE TO
MAYBE 1600 STUDENTS AND THIS YEAR I THINK WE’LL REACH NEARLY
3,000 STUDENTS. THE KIDS COME TO YOUR EMPLOYMENT
FULLY PAID AND ENSURED. IT IS A — INSURED. THE KIDS SIGN UP IT’S ONE OF
THOSE TYPE OF RARE OPPORTUNITIES THAT KIDS GET REAL LIFE
EXPERIENCES IN THE JOB SITE, AND I HAVE FOUND THAT THE EMPLOYER,
WE HIRE KIDS ALSO AT THE CHILDREN’S TRUST. WE SOMETIMES GET MORE OUT OF IT
SOMETIMES THAN KIDS. IT’S A FANTASTIC OPPORTUNITY FOR
BOTH SIDES. YOU GET TO ACT AS A MENTOR IN
MANY WAYS RIGHT WORKING WITH THOSE KIDS? ABSOLUTELY. SO JOSIE. TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE
INTERACTION YOU HAVE WITH THOSE STUDENTS. WHAT YOU SHOW THEM AND WHAT
THEY’RE LEARNING. WE’VE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO
BRING IN OVER 15 INTERNS OVER THE LAST TWO YEARS. THE FIRST GROUP WAS TEN INTERNS
THAT WORKED OVER THE SUMMER AND WE TREAT THEM, THEY’RE PART OF
OUR SYSTEM. THEY GO THROUGH THE SAME PROCESS
THAT ALL NEW HIRES GO THROUGH NEW HIRE ORIENTATION, THEY GET
THEIR UNIFORMS, THEY HAVE TRAINING AND WHAT WE DO IS WE
TREAT THEM A LITTLE SPECIAL BECAUSE THEY’RE THERE TO LEARN. ONE OF THE THINGS I DO TO
FACILITATE THEIR STAY WITH US IS I WORK WITH THEM ON SCHOOL
PROJECTS, MAKE SURE THEY GET THEIR PROJECTS DONE EVERY WEEK
TURNED IN ON TIME AND PAYROLL IS DONE PROPERLY. I’VE HELPED THEM DO POWERPOINT
PRESENTATIONS SO THEY CAN DO YEAR END PRESENTATION. ALL OF OUR MANAGERS DO THE SAME
THING. THEY’RE ALREADY ASKING ME, WHEN
ARE THE INTERNS COMING BACK AGAIN. WE’VE HAD THEM IN RECREATION,
THE POLE AND BEACH TEAM, MARKETING ON OUR FACEBOOK PAGE
AND THIS YEAR WE’RE GOING TO ADD OTHER DEPARTMENTS LIKE THE
ACCOUNTING DEPARTMENT IN THE HOTEL. YOU WERE TELLING ME THE
STUDENTS GET TO PICK WHICH SCHEDULE MIGHT WORK BEST FOR
THEM. PART OF THE INTERVIEW PROCESS, A
YOUNG MAN EARLY MORNINGS WORKED WELL FOR HIM. BECAUSE OF TRANSPORTATION. HE NEEDED TO BE THERE AT 6:30
BECAUSE THE TRANSPORTATION WAS AVAILABLE. HE TOOK THAT POSITION IN THE
RESTAURANT, WAS THERE 6:30 IN THE MORNING, NEVER LATE, REALLY
LOVED IT. HE OBTAINED A POSITION IN
ANOTHER HOTEL, WE HIGHLY RECOMMENDED HIM BECAUSE OF HIS
DEDICATION. WE DO LIKE AN INTERVIEW, WE
MATCH THEIR SKILLS AND INTERESTS AND HE WANTED TO BE SUCCESSFUL. WE DON’T WANT TO SAY THIS IS THE
ONLY THING WE HAVE AVAILABLE. WE’RE GOING TO WORK WITH THEM
AND THEIR TRANSPORTATION NEEDS. THEY’RE HAPPY TO COME TO WORK
WITH US AND AT THE END OF THE SIX WEEKS THAT’S WHAT WE’RE
LOOKING FOR FOR THEM TO LEARN AND BE SUCCESSFUL. WHAT IS SO GREAT IS THESE ARE
HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WHO HAVE THIS OPPORTUNITY OHAVE THIS
INTERVIEW PROCESS THEY HAVE TO GO THROUGH. THEY HAVE TO PRESENT A RESUME OR
TALK ABOUT WHAT THEIR SKILLS ARE SO THEY GET TO SELL THEMSELVES
TO THEIR POTENTIAL EMPLOYER. THESE ARE GREAT SKILLS THAT
THEY’RE EARNING AT AN EARLY AGE RIGHT? ABSOLUTELY. PUBLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS FROM
10th TO 12th GRADE. THE STUDENTS ARE TO PUT IN THEIR
RESUME IN A PORTAL SO THE EMPLOYER ACTUALLY SEES WHAT KIDS
APPLY TO THAT INDUSTRY OR BUSINESS. WE MAKE SURE WE CALL THE STUDENT
UP, SET UP AN INTERVIEW, THEY COME, WE HAVE A SYSTEM OF PEOPLE
ASK QUESTIONS, LIKE IF SOMEONE IS HIRING FULL TIME. WE ACTUALLY GO THROUGH THAT
PROCESS, THE STUDENT GETS TO SEE WHAT THE INTERVIEW IS. IF IT’S A GREAT FIT, YOU’RE
HIRED. YOU CAN SEE THEIR EYES OPEN UP
LIKE SAUCERS. WE’VE ENDED UP HIRING OUR I.T. INTERN PART TIME AFTER THEY
LEFT. SO THEY CAME AND STAYED WITH US. WE HEAR THAT OFTEN ABOUT
EMPLOYERS THAT THEY END UP HIRING THESE STUDENTS AS A PART
TIME EMPLOYEE AFTER THE INTERNSHIP IS OVER. I WOULD IMAGINE THESE
STUDENTS GRADUATE, STAY HERE AND ARE STILL WORK FOR THESE
COMPANIES RIGHT? ABSOLUTELY. THEY ARE RECEIVING HIGH SCHOOL
CREDITS ALSO AND ALSO COLLEGE CREDITS IF THEY ARE
DUAL-ENROLLED. THAT’S FANTASTIC. THESE COMPANIES, THESE
COMPANIES, PUT IN QUOTE, ARE HIRING THESE CHILDREN. BUT THE MONEY COMES FROM THE
TRUST AND OTHER ORGANIZATION HE. GUS YOU ARE BETTER ABLE TO
ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS. YOU HAVE THESE PARTNERS THAT
HELP. ROYAL CARIBBEAN, CAREERS OF
SOUTH FLORIDA, MIAMI-DADE AND US. SO WE AS A COLLECTIVE BODY ARE
FUNDING THIS PROGRAM. SO ONCE THE CHILD OR THE KID
GETS HIRED, AT A BUSINESS, THAT STUDENT SHOWS UP COMPLETELY
FUNDED, AND INSURED. IT IS NOT A PENNY OUT OF THE
POCKETS OF THE BUSINESSES. WE NEED BUSINESSES TO SIGN UP AS
WE ALSO NEED STUDENTS TO SIGN UP. HOW ARE YOU RECRUITING
COMPANIES? WE ARE GOING TO DIFFERENT
ORGANIZATIONS SUCH AS CHAMBER OF COMMERCES, IF YOU ARE WORKING IN
A BUSINESS, ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS GO ON TO GETMYINTERN.ORG AND
SIGN UP YOUR BUSINESS. AND THEN YOU’RE GOING TO BE ABLE
TO LOOK AT ALL THE KIDS THAT ACTUALLY TRY TO — THEY WANT TO
WORK WITH YOU BECAUSE THEY SUBMIT RESUMES TO THE BUSINESSES
THEY CHOSE ALSO. AND COULD YOU SET UP THOSE TYPE
OF INTERVIEWS. AND THE KIDS, IF THERE’S A
TEEN WATCHING, MIGHT THINK, HOW MUCH MONEY AM I GOING TO MAKE? HOW MUCH DO THEY MAKE? IT’S 30 HOURS A WEEK, OKAY,
YOU GET PAID UP FRONT, AND THEN IT’S DIRECT DEPOSITED INTO THE
BANK ACCOUNT YOU HAVE TO SET UP. ALL THESE REAL WORLD ISSUES. REAL WORLD ISSUES. THEY’RE GOING TO MAKE ROUGHLY
ABOUT $1300 FOR THE FIVE WEEKS THEY’RE GOING TO BE WORK. AND JOSIE, WHY DO YOU ENJOY
THIS SO MUCH? YOU JUST GLOW WHEN YOU TALK
ABOUT HAVING THE STUDENTS AROUND. IT’S A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO
DEVELOP THE STUDENT GIVE THEM THE OPPORTUNITY. WE’RE CREATING THE WORKFORCE,
FOR THE FUTURE, AND THEIR EXCITEMENT THAT THEY BRING TO
THE ORGANIZATION, THEY HAVE A NEW WAY OF LOOKING AT THINGS. YOU JUST SORT OF SAY WOW, I
DIDN’T LOOK AT IT THAT WAY BEFORE. SO THEIR ENTHUSIASM, THEIR
